Just kidding, of course. But working in a brewpub where the wondrous smells of freshly brewed ales tempt my nostrils every day make it pretty difficult to not want to drink every day. To make matters worse we’re practically “encouraged” to drink at work every day. We have an evening ritual called a “beer slam” to celebrate a job well done at the end of each busy night. It’s not easy to pass up that team spirit & the smoothness of a dark, rich, freshly poured oatmeal stout as you quickly chug all 16 oz. I won’t lie and say that the zippy smell of a hopped up pale ale doesn’t make me want to drink a guests beer on my way to the table but I simply must resist. Over the past two weeks, I’ve been saying no to booze, beer & alcohol of all sorts Monday through Thursday. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal for most people but let’s get real here. I live in Wisconsin & I work in a brewery. Saying no Monday through Thursday is kiiiind of a big deal.
But this is why I’m choosing to say no during the week:
1.) I don’t need the empty calories that alcohol provides.
2.) my life is not stressful, sad, or empty enough to justify drinking during the week.
I’m not a college student. I don’t live in a dorm.
4.) when I drink, I eat. Drinking makes me hungry, simple as that. And the foods I crave when drinking are not healthy.
5.) I’m easily hungover. Seriously, sometimes all it takes is a few drinks for me to feel real bad the next day. And the foods I crave when hungover are not healthy.
6.) drinking on the weekends has a whole new appeal. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t work traditional hours & don’t often get weekends off, so saving any sort of boozing for the weekend makes it more relaxing & rewarding.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t plan to spend every weekend intoxicated, I just like the idea of rewarding myself with a few drinks after a week of saying no to co-workers literally putting glasses of beer in my hands.
And here is where I lose all credibility & tell you that I finished off a half a bottle of wine (and a bloody Mary & a glass of my favorite Scotch Ale) with my mom last night. What can I say? It was a mid-week “vacation” day. The sun was shining on my parents back patio. And she had these irresistible wine glasses…
Do you indulge in a drink or two during the week?
I won’t pretend that I’m going to stick with this no-drink weekday plan all summer. Having a refreshing beer on an outdoor patio during the summer is perhaps one of my favorite things ever, but I am really enjoying “just saying no” to drinking during the week. Friends & co-workers look at me like I have a third eye in the middle of my forehead but saying no feels great!
