Same Love

Unless you’re living under a rock, you already know that today is Valentine’s Day. And unless you’re completely clueless, you know that Valentine’s Day is all about love.

Well, it’s actually more about cards, sweet treats, roses, and romantic dinners these days, but what we’re supposed to celebrate on Valentine’s Day is simple: LOVE.

Even though the hubby asked me to be his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day thirteen (THIRTEEN?!) years ago, it’s not a super big deal in our house. Sure, I love me some conversation hearts, chocolate, and roses flowers, but I don’t need any of those things.

In fact, The Beatles said it best…all I need is love. It’s basic. It’s human. We all need love. And while some people love differently than others or think of love in a different way than others, underneath it’s all the same love. Regardless of our age, race, sex, polictical or religious affiliation, we all give love, and we all need love. From whom, or how we get that love, need matter only to us.

I’ve been obsessing over this song and video for the past few weeks and I thought today would be the perfect day to share it with you. It’s message is something I simply cannot get out of my head. Just like we’re all born with blue eyes or brown hair, or dark skin or light skin, it is my belief that we’re all born to love, and to desire love, in a certain way. And that, just like a birth mark where the sun don’t shine, is nobody’s business but our own.

Please, watch. Listen. Open your heart to love. Love of all kinds.

Please know that I do not intend for this to be anti-church, anti-Christian, or anti-anything. It is simply pro-love.

My hope is that some day, sooner rather than later, every person who loves another is allowed to marry that person. Take a vow to spend the rest of their lives with that person; in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, in good times and in bad. And with the support of their families. My wish is that gay marriage, interracial marriage, marriages that merge religions, are a thing of the past. My wish is that marriages no longer need titles because all marriages will be equal. After all, underneath it’s all the same love.

Happy Valentine’s Day. Hug your Valentine tightly today. Love them the way they deserve to be loved. The way that only you know how to love them.
