Which Wich is a new to me sandwich shop in town. In fact, it’s new to Wisconsin. The Middleton location is the first in the state. I can’t pretend I even knew the place existed until tonight when J suggested picking it up while we were out running a few errands.
Have you been?
I love the concept. You walk in to a giant menu board full of “base options”:
Turkey, Ham & Pork, Beef, Chicken, Seafood, Vegetarian, Italian, Classics, Comforts, & Breakfast.
Each base option has 5 subcategories:
Thank You Turkey (stuffing & cranberry), Buffalo Chicken, Elvis Wich (banana & peanut butter-yum!), Monte Cristo, to name a few.
You make all your selections on the appropriate paper bag, hand it over to the cashier, and they start making your ‘wich.
They have tons of extras, including ice cream shakes, which made my husband a pretty happy man.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into when we walked in the door so needless to say, I was a little overwhelmed. Apparently the husband had already done some planning ahead after talking about this place with some work buddies. He knew he wanted a meatball sub, filled out the appropriate “paperwork” and waited rather impatiently while I tried to make up my mind.
It was rainy, gloomy, and depressing outside today so I knew I wanted something hot. I went with boring old turkey, pepper jack cheese, and crispy onion strings on wheat. See that bold blue line?
That’s where the cashier crushed my dreams, telling me they didn’t have avocado because “it wasn’t ripe yet”. Obviously avocado was going to be the star of my ‘wich show and I was told I couldn’t have it. This was especially maddening since I have a bag of ripe avocadoes on my kitchen counter.
Regardless, my sandwich was good. As was the bite I had of the hubs’. We also gave their house chips a try. Perfectly seasoned and tasty. The real bonus? Coke products! I’ve only been drinking soda on the weekends as of late, but I went for one tonight since I drank a TON of water at work today.
They have detailed nutrtion info on their website, as well as an ingredient list for dietary/allergy concerns. My sandwich clocked in around 441 calories. I could’ve saved myself 250 calories by opting for their Lettuce Wich, but like I said, hot & melty was just sounding too good on this gloomy day.
Overall I’d give the place a B- with much potential for improving that grade when their avocadoes ripen up a bit. 😉
I’d also love to go back for a breakfast wich sometime.
It’s located right across the street from Costco so I can see it becoming a Saturday afternoon lunch spot every few months when we go to stock up at the ‘co.
Do you have a Which Wich in your area? What’s your favorite sandwich shop?
I guess I’m not much of a sandwich person. We’ll hit up Subway & Jimmy John’s from time to time, purely out of convenience, but I guess I’d rather pick up a quesadilla from Pancheros or Wisconsin Mac & Cheese from Noodles if we’re getting “quick” food.
